About the BSO Education Program
Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony is
regarded as one of the world's great orchestras for both its
artistic and educational achievements.
Our mission is to "foster and maintain an organization dedicated to the making of music consonant with the highest aspirations of the musical art, creating performances and providing educational opportunities at the highest level of excellence."
Our education mission is carried out through a variety of other programs that reach some 35,000 students throughout New England. The Orchestra works with kids from ages 7 to 18 across a wide range of ethnic, economic, and racial groups. Our programs include community education partnerships, Days in the Arts, the BSO Education Resource Centers, professional development workshops and curriculum resource materials for teachers. The BSO is also a partner in Project STEP (String Training and Education Program) for students of color.
As one of the foremost arts organizations in the country, the Boston Symphony Orchestra has used its stature to develop, nurture and strengthen ties with surrounding communities. In doing so, the BSO has shaped and influenced the future of music education in classrooms and neighborhoods. The Education and Community Programs Department of the BSO has surpassed its founding charge to "educate, inspire and entertain" existing audiences. The department has pioneered a progressive music education approach by supporting existing standards for music education, assisting in the development of music education rubrics and curriculum, and providing support in the implementation of federal, state, and local music education standards.
