Shaping the Future
The Boston Symphony Orchestra takes very seriously its role as one of the foremost arts organizations in the country. We promise to use our position to help shape the future of young people by encouraging music education and by developing and strengthening ties with our surrounding community.
As one of the foremost arts organizations in the country, The Boston Symphony Orchestra has used its stature to develop, nurture and strengthen ties with surrounding communities. In so doing, the BSO has shaped and influenced the future of music education in classrooms and neighborhoods.
The Education and Community Programs Department of the BSO has surpassed its founding charge to "educate, inspire and entertain" existing audiences. The department has pioneered a progressive music education approach by supporting existing standards for music education, assisting in the development of music education rubrics and curriculum, and providing support in the implementation of federal, state, and local music education standards.
In communities such as Chelsea, Peabody, Lawrence and Lynn, teachers have worked with BSO Education staff to study and evaluate the effectiveness of current music education practices. Teachers, students and education administrators have also benefited from long- term mentoring relationships with BSO musicians.
Beyond the classroom, community organizations in Roxbury, Chinatown and Worcester have worked with the Education staff to integrate music education into existing programming efforts. Whether the focus is arts exposure, family literacy, advanced student musicianship or English as a second language, the Education staff always seeks to create relevance and foster musical ownership with every classical encounter.
As a complement to other music education initiatives, the Education and Community Programs office supports a cohesive learning experience through programs such as Youth and Family Concerts and Days in the Arts.
