As part of the festivities, Tanglewood
will release a daily free digital audio stream
from the Tanglewood archives on tanglewood.org, with each item to
be available for purchase after the 24-hour free sampling period; a
Tanglewood Music Center master class aimed toward
the next generation of aspiring musicians will be presented online
weekly to worldwide audiences; a new lecture series,
"Concerning Music and Society," will feature a
critics' forum as well as discussions on music and technology and
film music. And 75 new trees will be planted
throughout the Tanglewood grounds to enhance the already glorious
surroundings. The musical programming that of course makes up the
heart of the Festival will honor historic moments in Tanglewood
history while also looking forward to future collaborations with
icons of the classical music world.
The Gala Anniversary Concert on Saturday, July
14, will feature performances by the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and
the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, with
conductors Keith Lockhart, John Williams, and
Andris Nelsons, and special guests including
Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Peter
Serkin, longtime Tanglewood friend James
Taylor, and the Tanglewood Festival
Chorus. The opening BSO concert (July 6) will be an
all-Beethoven program, led by Christoph von
Dohnányi, replicating the BSO's very first program at
Tanglewood in 1937. An all-Wagner concert (July 21) will duplicate
the 1937 program that was interrupted by a powerful thunderstorm,
leading to the construction of the Koussevitzky Music Shed. In
addition, with conductor Christoph Eschenbach on the podium, the
BSO repeats a famous 1986 program that made headlines when
conducted originally by Leonard Bernstein (July 20).
Other highlights include Anne-Sophie Mutter as
conductor and soloist for an all-Mozart program (July 13) and
Pinchas Zukerman leading an all-Bach program
(August 10). A gala 80th Birthday Celebration for Boston Pops
Laureate Conductor John Williams features
Gabriela Montero, Jessye Norman, and surprise
guests (August 18). Yo-Yo Ma presents his
Silk Road Ensemble (June 22 and 24) and is also
soloist with the BSO (August 11). Returning guests also include
Joshua Bell, Yefim Bronfman, Nelson Freire, Gil
Shaham, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Gerhard Oppitz performs Brahms's complete solo
piano music in a series of Ozawa Hall recitals; the Mark
Morris Dance Group returns for its annual collaboration
with Tanglewood Music Center musicians; Chris Botti and his band
play an Ozawa Hall performance, and Bernadette
Peters makes a rare Tanglewood appearance with the Boston
Pops. The inimitable James Taylor performs his
James Taylor at Tanglewood show on July 2, 3 and 4.
