[James Sommerville] James Sommerville

James Sommerville joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as principal horn in January 1998. After winning the highest prizes at the Munich, Toulon, and CBC Young Performers competitions, and with the support of the CBC and generous grants from the Canada Council and the Macmillan Foundation, Mr. Sommerville embarked on a solo career that has brought critically acclaimed appearances with all the major Canadian orchestras, the radio orchestras of Bavaria and Berlin, and many other orchestras throughout North America and Europe. His disc of the Mozart horn concertos with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra won the JUNO Award for Best Classical Recording in Canada. His CBC recordings of Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings and Canticle III were nominated for Junos in 1999 and 1997. more >

Richard Sebring is associate principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and principal horn of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, Mr. Sebring studied at Indiana University, the New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Washington, and the Tanglewood Music Center. more >

Jason Snider Jason Snider
Horn, Boston Symphony Orchestra Gordon and Mary Ford Kingsley Family chair
Jason Snider joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as fourth horn in March 2007. Prior to his BSO appointment, he held positions as second horn with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and associate principal horn of the San Antonio Symphony. A native of Arkansas, Mr. Snider attended Northwestern University, where he studied with Norman Schweikert, Dale Clevenger, and Roland Pandolfi. During this time, he performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for two seasons. After graduating with honors, Mr. Snider pursued graduate work at Rice University, studying with Roger Kaza and William Ver Meulen. more >

[Jonathan Menkis] Jonathan Menkis
Horn, Boston Symphony Orchestra Jean-Noël and Mona N. Tariot chair
Originally from West Orange, New Jersey, and now living in Lincoln, Jonathan Menkis received his bachelor's degree from Ithaca College in 1981, then joined the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra as associate principal horn.  He became assistant principal horn of the New Orleans Symphony the following season and was appointed to the Boston Symphony Orchestra horn section in 1984.  Mr. Menkis has been a member of the Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, and American Wind Symphony Orchestra.  He is on the faculty of New England Conservatory.  Mr. Menkis is an occasional soloist in the Boston area and performs chamber music frequently. more >
