Opening Night at Pops: 125th Pops Anniversary Celebration
Symphony Hall
Boston, MA
Keith Lockhart, conductor
Doc Severinsen, guest artist
Idina Menzel, actress/singer/songwriter
Michael Chertock, piano
Pre-Concert Entertainment and Reception Symphony Hall will be festively transformed for the evening, with giant balloon arches at the main entrance, a huge “125” on top of the marquee to commemorate the anniversary milestone, accent lighting on the exterior of the building to illuminate Symphony Hall’s distinctive architecture and a special red carpet leading from the Massachusetts Avenue sidewalk up the stairway to the main lobby. Horse-drawn carriages will arrive with actors in period dress portraying two of the notables from the very first Pops concert over a century ago, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Boston Pops Orchestra founder Colonel Henry Lee Higginson. Keith Lockhart and Peter Fiedler, son of conductor Arthur Fiedler, will make a grand entrance from an antique fire truck reminiscent of the legendary maestro’s early days with the orchestra. The evening also includes a celebratory pre-concert reception throughout the hall beginning at 7:00pm.

Broadway powerhouse and Tony Award winning actress Idina Menzel – who currently stars on the hit FOX television show Glee! – joins Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops to perform a full set of repertoire ranging from musical theater favorites to classic pop, including new arrangements of her most famous shows, Wicked and Rent, as well as songs from her recent album I Stand. Earlier in the evening, Keith Lockhart leads the orchestra to honor the artistic vision of its three most famous Boston Pops conductors – Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart. The concert highlights the extraordinary legacy of Arthur Fiedler (Pops Conductor 1930-79), one of the most beloved figures in Boston history, with pianist Michael Chertock performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The program continues with music by acclaimed conductor/composer John Williams (Pops Conductor, 1980-93), including selections from E.T., The Extra-terrestrial, Harry Potter and Star Wars. Keith Lockhart (Pops Conductor 1994-present) leads the audience in a sing along to The Beatles: Rock Band, a fully orchestrated arrangement featuring some of The Beatles’ iconic songs synched to the groundbreaking game design by Harmonix Music (producers of the wildly popular game series Rock Band) projected above the orchestra on the Pops’ 44 foot-wide screen.
