The Boston Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Labor Day Weekend Tanglewood Jazz Festival August 31-September 2 at the Orchestra’s summer home in the Berkshire Hills in Lenox, Massachusetts.
Opening the festival Friday, August 31, at 8 p.m. will be the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band followed by jazz trumpeter, Hugh Masekela. Preceding the main stage event, Cuban jazz pianist, Aruan Ortiz will perform in the Jazz Café at 6:30 pm. On Saturday, September 1, the lineup will kickoff at 3 pm with a live taping of NPR’s “Piano Jazz” with host Marian McPartland in her sixth year at Tanglewood. Her guest for this year’s taping will be pianist, Renee Rosnes. Preceding “Piano Jazz,” French jazz vocalist, Mina Agossi will perform in the Jazz Café at 1:30 pm.
Headlining the festival on Saturday, September 1, at 8 p.m. will be Kurt Elling with some very special friends, followed by Randy Crawford and Joe Sample. Preceding the main stage event, Boston saxophonist, Grace Kelly, will perform in the Jazz Café at 6:30. The Sunday, September 2, lineup begins at 1:30 with Kevin Mahogany’s Kansas City Revue featuring the music of Big Joe Turner starring Cyrus Chestnut and Red Holloway and featuring vocalist Kathy Kosins and the Chuck Bergeron Trio. Following the Tribute to Joe Turner, BossaBrasil will take the stage with performances by Brazilian superstars Cesar Camargo Mariano, Romero Lubambo and vocalist Leny Andrade. The Maria Schneider Orchestra will follow. Preceding the 1:30 show, vocalist Sachal Vasandani will perform in the Jazz Café at 12 noon. Following the 1:30 show, The Edmar Casteneda Trio will perform in the Jazz Café at 5 pm.
The Sunday evening lineup on September 2 at 8 pm will feature Hank Jones and Roberta Gambarini followed by Ahmad Jamal and Jimmy Heath. Preceding the main stage show, Italian vocalist Chiara Civello will perform in the Jazz Café at 6:30 pm. All main stage concerts will be held at Seiji Ozawa Hall.
