Revered Masters at Tanglewood

Levine Leads

In his fourth summer as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Maestro James Levine conducts twelve Tanglewood programs, ranging from epic opera to classical favorites to cutting-edge music that reflects the rich complexity of our time. Maestro Levine presents all-Brahms program (7/25) that features the Symphony No. 3 and the Piano Concerto No. 1 with Yefim Bronfman as soloist. Another highlight pairs Mahler's Symphony No. 1 with the Tanglewood Premiere of John Harbison's Symphony No. 5, a BSO commission featuring mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey (7/18). Peter Serkin joins the orchestra (7/13) for performances of Bach and Mozart on a program also featuring Haydn's crowd-pleasing Symphony No. 104, London and Schubert's dramatic Symphony No. 4, Tragic. Schubert is also given special note at Tanglewood. The Beaux Arts Trio devotes an entire evening to Schubert's profoundly inspired piano trios in the ensemble's final farewell performance before disbanding, (8/21), and acclaimed British pianist Imogen Cooper offers an all-Schubert recital of sonatas and impromptus.

Distinguished Collaborators

For nearly 40 years, Bernard Haitink, the BSO' venerable Conductor Emeritus, has been an invaluable inspiration to the orchestra, which enjoys two back-to-back performances with the maestro this season-an all-Beethoven program (7/11) followed by Mahler's magnificent Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, featuring the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and soloists Heidi Grant Murphy and the exciting young Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn in her Tanglewood debut (7/12). A welcome return to the podium brings Leonard Slatkin, the newly appointed director of the Detroit Symphony. His BSO concert with Midori (7/19) marks his first Tanglewood appearance in almost 15 years. Frequent guest Andre Previn takes the BSO podium to lead Prokofiev's stirring Symphony No. 5 and Khachaturian's Piano Concerto, featuring Jean-Yves Thibaudet as soloist (8/16). BSO Assistant Conductor Shi-Yeon Sung makes her debut with the orchestra with a program featuring Mendelssohn's sunny Symphony No. 4, Italian and Schumann's Piano Concerto, played by Garrick Ohlsson (7/20).
