Licensed HVAC Mechanic/Technician
To service, maintain, install, operate, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems at historic Symphony Hall and adjacent properties. Work as a member of the House Crew to maintain and operate the physical plant within the responsibilities of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Facilities Department. Working knowledge and experience with all types of HVAC systems including steam, hot water, chilled water, VAV and constant volume systems. Must be able to troubleshoot and service (or work with specialized technicians and contractors) all types of HVAC and refrigeration equipment including, but not limited to, steam absorption and electric chillers, air handling units, heat pumps, cooling towers, pumps, fans, variable speed drives, electric and pneumatic controls, and some food service equipment. Implement energy conservation measures, monitor and operate Building Management and Control Systems (Metasys). Working familiarity is required with life safety systems, including fire protection systems, fire alarm systems, emergency generator systems and plumbing systems. Special Conditions: Strenuous physical activity is required and mechanic must be able to access and safely work in and on all areas of the facility including, but not limited to, roofs, attics, plenums, confined spaces, ladders, scaffolds, underneath objects, etc. Exterior work will require working in all weather conditions and must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds and qualify to operate a fork lift after training. As a member of the Symphony Hall House Crew, mechanic will be required to occasionally perform manual labor to set up and change over floor assemblies, seating, and tables for Symphony, Pops, and outside events and performances. During performance seasons mechanic will alternate shifts and weekends with other HVAC mechanic to provide coverage for the facility during occupancy. Mandatory overtime is required and must be available for 24/7 response to facility emergencies. Qualifications: Licensed HVAC & Refrigeration Journeyman; high school diploma or equivalent, (with preference given to advanced education); minimum of 5 years experience with increasing responsibility, (historic facilities and/or non-profit institutions a plus). Must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, meet deadlines and provide excellent customer and patron service.
