WGBH's Brian Bell on Pictures at an Exhibition

To open the first Boston Symphony program for 2008, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos turns to a great showpiece, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Scored for piano by the composer, BSO Music Director Serge Koussevitzky commissioned Maurice Ravel to orchestrate Pictures, leaving us with one of the great symphonic showpieces of all time. About the Music

Two Strauss tone poems anchor this virtuosic orchestral program led by Spanish conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, a frequent guest on the BSO podium. Strauss’s heroic and romantic tone poem Don Juan has as its subject the legendary lover, while the musical adventures of the folk hero Till Eulenspiegel are of a more mischievous and humorous nature. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, originally written for piano in 1874, is best known in this Ravel orchestration from 1922.
