About the Music

BSO Assistant conductor Julian Kuerti leads Tchaikovsky's tone poem-like, four-movement Manfred Symphony, based programmatically on Byron's verse-play about a self-tortured hero who wanders the Alps seeking redemption. Brahms's rarely heard Handel Variations, originally for piano, were orchestrated by the important English composer Edmund Rubbra in 1938. The esteemed American cellist Lynn Harrell joins the BSO for performances of Sir Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto.
