Now in its 129th season, the Boston Symphony Orchestra gave its inaugural concert on October 22, 1881, and has continued to uphold the vision of its founder, the businessman, philanthropist, Civil War veteran, and amateur musician Henry Lee Higginson, for well over a century. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, South America, and China; in addition, it reaches audiences numbering in the millions through its performances on radio, television, and recordings.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the election of Edmund (Ted) F. Kelly as the new chairman of the BSO Board of Trustees, a three-year term to take effect as of September 1, 2011. In addition, the BSO Board of Trustees has elected Stephen B. Kay and Robert P. O'Block to serve as co-chairmen, effective immediately, with terms running through August 31, 2011.

Mendelssohn and Rossini, March 18-20
|
|
In his second week with the orchestra, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos returns March 18-20 to conduct Rossini’s Stabat Mater, the most acclaimed of the composer’s late works. This 1841 choral masterpiece features the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver, conductor, and a quartet of internationally-acclaimed soloists: soprano Albina Shagimuratova and mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in their BSO debuts; tenor Eric Cutler; and bass-baritone Alfred Walker. The program’s first half is Mendelssohn’s Overture and Incidental Music to Shakespeare’s beloved play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, also featuring Ms. Shagimuratova, Ms. Coote, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

Debussy’s kaleidoscopic 1913 ballet score Jeux, written for the Ballets Russes, begins the program, which concludes with Schubert’s majestic Symphony in C, a cornerstone of the early Romantic era in music.

The BSO has presented programs to entertain and educate young people since 1888. In 1959, Harry Ellis Dickson revitalized the program and launched the Youth and Family Concert Series. Fifty years later, thousands of children are still enthralled by the magic of the BSO as they are introduced to classical music through these special concerts.

Daphnis Et Chloé Wins Grammy Award!

Best Orchestral Performance James Levine and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s recording of Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloé, featuring the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver, conductor, won the Grammy Award in the category of Orchestral Performance at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards on January 31, 2010.

As part of Opening Night at Symphony 2009, the Boston Symphony Orchestra introduces an imaginative new concept – the “Electronic Program Book” - that utilizes the Symphony's website to link to and share information about other organizations of interest to BSO patrons. Each organization participates at no direct cost thanks to the generosity of Opening Night table sponsors who underwrite the cost of participation. Donor-sponsored organizations include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Northeastern University School of Music, The Boston Foundation, Tenacity, Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club, and NEW BENEFACTOR Emerson Umbrella. The first program of its kind, the “Electronic Program Book” allows the sponsored-organizations to reach the 7.1 million people from around the world who visit bso.org each year.
