For most of its 130-plus-year history, the Boston Symphony Orchestra has been celebrated for its tradition of performing French orchestral repertoire. This disc showcases the versatility of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players in presenting five diverse works of 20th-century French chamber music.

The impetus was a longstanding desire to record Henri Dutilleux's Citations, Dutilleux being a composer whose works the BSO has championed for many years. To complement the Dutilleux, the goal was to bring together pieces employing many different ensemble configurations. The repertoire staples by Ravel and Debussy are in balance with the lesser-known works by Henri Tomasi and Jean Françaix. The result: a trio, a quartet, a quintet, a septet, and a dectet, comprising a satisfying and wide-ranging-though of course by no means comprehensive-sampling of distinctive, but all distinctly French, compositional voices from the last century.
