For this all-Russian program, superstar Chinese pianist Lang Lang joins Andris Nelsons and the BSO as soloist in Sergei Prokofiev's brilliant, witty Piano Concerto No. 3. The composer himself was soloist in the premiere in front of an unenthusiastic Chicago audience in 1921, but in short order this sparkling, virtuosic piece became one of the most popular of 20th-century concertos. Opening the concert is the celebratory Festive Overture of Dmitri Shostakovich, who wrote this short, exciting piece for the Bolshoi Theatre to mark the 37th anniversary of the Soviet Revolution. The great orchestral showpiece Pictures at an Exhibition-Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's solo-piano impressions of a series of paintings and illustrations-closes the program. Ravel made this famous orchestration for legendary BSO conductor Serge Koussevitzky.

Join us at 5pm for a celebratory pre-concert reception and a complimentary glass of wine or champagne.

Surveying the Season-A Piccoloist's Perspective

BSO 101 offers an opportunity to increase one's knowledge and enjoyment of music to be performed in upcoming concerts by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In this community-based session, BSO lecturer/annotator Marc Mandel and BSO piccolo player Cynthia Meyers offer a unique perspective on the BSO's 2016-17 Symphony Hall season, focusing on the piccolo's presence in significant works of the orchestral repertoire reflecting a wide variety of musical styles and approaches. Composers to be discussed will include Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Mahler. Geared to general audiences, the presentation will include both live and recorded musical examples, and is self-contained, so no prior musical training is required.

Please RSVP to reserve your place for the date or dates you're planning to attend.

Thomas Adès on his Totentanz (2013)
In cooperation with the Boston Symphony Orchestra

Thomas Adès, pianist/composer/conductor, who assumes his official role as the BSO's Artistic Partner this fall, will conduct his Totentanz (2013) at Symphony Hall on November 3, 4, & 5.  Join Maestro Adès, Harvard art historian Prof. Joseph Koerner, and Harvard music historian Dr. Drew Masseyfor a conversation about this intensely dramatic composition.  Totentanz - sung in German by soprano and baritone soloists - was inspired by a Renaissance frieze (now lost) depicting Death dancing with individuals from all strata of humanity that once graced the walls of Lübeck's Marienkirche.  In a wide-ranging discussion, our guests will consider art & religion in the German Renaissance, how our view of life and death has changed in the past 500 years, and how music expresses the complexities of class and society.

Wine & Cheese reception to follow.

New Wednesday, March 29 All-French BSO Concert Replaces Postponed February 9 Concert

To replace the Boston Symphony Orchestra concert of February 9, 2017, canceled due to severe weather conditions, the orchestra will add a concert to its schedule on March 29, 2017. The all-French program features the BSO debut of conductor Alain Altinoglu in collaboration with violinist Renaud Capuçon in Eduoud Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, along with music of Berlioz, Dutilleux, and Roussel. This concert will be performed in addition to the already scheduled March 30-April 1 program featuring Mr. Altinoglu and Mr. Capuçon.

Lalo's Spain-inspired Symphonie espagnole, a piece not performed by the BSO at Symphony Hall since 1985, is one of the great 19th-century showpieces for the violin. Opening the concert is Berlioz's colorful Roman Carnival Overture, which incorporates themes from the composer's Italianate opera Benvenuto Cellini. The second half of the program includes Henri Dutilleux's Symphony No. 2, Le Double-commissioned by the BSO for its 75th anniversary and premiered by the BSO and Charles Munch in 1959-and Albert Roussel's Suite No. 2 from his 1930 ballet Bacchus et Ariane.

The full listing for the Wednesday, March 29 replacement concert appears below.

Wednesday, March 29

Alain Altinoglu, conductor
Renaud Capuçon, violin
BERLIOZ Roman Carnival Overture
LALO Symphonie espagnole, for violin and orchestra
