Andris Nelsons, conductor
HAYDN Symphony No. 103, Drumroll
MAHLER Symphony No. 1
In two concerts Saturday, September 23, and Tuesday, September 26, Andris Nelsons leads the BSO in works by two of music history's greatest symphonists. Opening the program is the Symphony No. 103, Drumroll, one of the seminal "London" symphonies by Haydn, a composer for whose music Mr. Nelsons has shown a particular affinity. Following the Haydn is Mahler's at times brooding, at times vigorously energetic First Symphony. Completed when the composer was in his late twenties, it already displays the expansiveness and innovation that would become increasingly heightened in his later symphonies.
