About the Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year Award

Launched last year, Gramophone’s Orchestra of the Year Award attracted more than 24,000 votes from all around the world, with the Seattle Symphony securing the accolade. This year, a greater number of public votes are expected, with campaigns running on Gramophone’s website and social media platforms in addition to featured playlists on Apple Music. As well as a dynamic playlist featuring all ten ensembles (updated regularly), each orchestra will have its own playlist featuring recent recordings as well as classics from each ensemble’s catalogue.

James Jolly, Editor in Chief of Gramophone, stated: ‘The first-ever Orchestra of the Year Award last year captured the imaginations of more than 20,000 music lovers from all over the world, and propelled the Seattle Symphony to victory. This year Gramophone has shortlisted ten ensembles who have made a huge impact over the last year, invariably thanks to a special dynamism between conductor and players. Guided by some superb recordings, we’ve highlighted ten magnificent ensembles. Just head to Apple Music to listen to the playlists and castyour vote.’
