Summer Sundays Return To Tanglewood

Summer Sundays

After great success in its inaugural season last year, Summer Sundays return this summer to enhance the experience of an afternoon at Tanglewood.
Beginning when the grounds open at noon, the fun and festive atmosphere spreads across campus when activities for all ages, including lectures, musical demonstrations, food and wine tastings, face painting and crafts for kids, yoga, and nature walks take place throughout the grounds.
In many ways, the series replicates the festive atmosphere of some of Tanglewood's signature events - like Tanglewood on Parade, the Tanglewood Family Fun Fest, and One Day University at Tanglewood - and brings them together weekly throughout the season.

A highlight of Summer Sundays, the popular lecture series, also returns, taking place in the Theatre every Sunday through August 26 at 12:30pm. The educational series of informal talks, unique performances, musical demonstrations, and public masterclasses features three Bernstein-focused programs this summer, in honor of the yearlong celebration of the great American composer and conductor's birthday centennial. The talks include:

August 5
Piano master class with Kirill Gerstein
Tanglewood's 2018 Koussevitzky Artist Kirill Gerstein leads a piano masterclass featuring talented young students from the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

August 12
Harp demonstration with Tanglewood Music Center Fellows
Tanglewood Music Center Harp Fellows are joined by BSO Principal Harpist Jessica Zhou for a program offering the audience a closer look at this elegant and complex instrument.

August 19
Performance by Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Ensemble
As a finale to their summer of study, TMC Vocal Fellows come together as an ensemble for a program of music spanning six centuries, including works by Bach, Brahms, Gesualdo, Grainger, Haydn, Janequin, Messiaen, Schumann, Rautavaara, and Weelkes.

August 26
Bernstein and Tanglewood-From the BSO Archives, with BSO Archivist Bridget Carr
In the final event of the Bernstein Centennial Summer, the BSO's Blanche and George Jones Director of Archives and Digital Collections Bridget Carr joins Michael Nock, Associate Director for Student Affairs at the Tanglewood Music Center, to trace Leonard Bernstein's history with the BSO and Tanglewood through rare documentary photos, audio recordings, and video clips from the BSO Archives.
