Announcing BSO’s Next President and CEO
To the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood community:
With great pleasure, we write to share the wonderful news of the appointment of Gail Samuel as the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s next Eunice and Julian Cohen President and Chief Executive Officer. Currently President of the Hollywood Bowl and Chief Operating Officer of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gail will join the BSO after providing 25 years of senior leadership to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Gail is a proven and exceptional leader of orchestras. Her experience and skill in working with artists and players, her creativity and strategic perspective make her an ideal choice for the BSO's future. We are thrilled at this hopeful and exciting moment in the history of the BSO.
Gail Samuel’s appointment ends a year-long consultative and selection process that involved wide and deep participation from across the BSO, our Boston and Berkshires communities and throughout the arts and culture sector internationally.
You can learn more about Gail in the full press release available here. There you will find some of her initial comments on her BSO appointment as well as thoughts on her selection from BSO Ray and Maria Stata Music Director Andris Nelsons and current President and CEO Mark Volpe, who is retiring from the position after 23 years as the BSO’s executive leader. To ensure a smooth transition, Mark will remain in the role until Gail arrives in Boston to begin her tenure in June 2021.
We look forward to introducing Gail Samuel to the BSO, Pops and Tanglewood communities in the months to come.
With gratitude for your continued commitment to the orchestra,
Susan W. Paine, Chair, Board of Trustees
