A Message from BSAV Chair, Marty Levine

Marty Levine

Dear Fellow Volunteers,
By the time you read this, the Symphony Hall fall season will be in full swing.

The "books" have been closed on another successful summer season at Tanglewood. As reported in The Berkshire Eagle, "350,000 pairs of ears took in a Tanglewood performance this summer at 94 ticketed events in the Shed and Ozawa Hall." This number is in line with attendance the last few seasons. Tanglewood's all-time record of 386,870 attendees was in 1998.

The Eagle went on to report that celebrity performers and annual traditional events, such as Film Night and Tanglewood on Parade, attracted the largest crowds. Pop and rock stars such as James Taylor (a local resident and favorite of all) as well as Sting, John Mellencamp and Diana Ross also drew crowds.

A record number of pre-season rock, pop, jazz and Boston Pops events from mid-June to early July before the eight-week orchestra season, and five more in late August and during the Labor Day Weekend kept Tanglewood busy and pleased local hotels, restaurants and shops.

Overall the weather mostly cooperated and senior BSO management seemed pleased with the results of the Tanglewood season.

Beginning this past September, we have some new members of the BSAV Executive Committee. Jerry Dreher is Chair-Elect who will become Chair of the BSAV in September 2018. Jerry is not at all new to the Executive Committee as he previously served as Vice-Chair for Boston. Jerry joined the BSAV in 2001 and is the only volunteer who has been active in leadership roles both in Boston and Tanglewood. In Boston, Jerry has served as a Tour Guide, Membership Stand/Hall Greeter, Computer/Office Support as well as many other areas. His leadership roles have included being project lead for the Tanglewood Music Center Lunch Program, and for volunteer recruitment in Boston. He has also been the recipient of the Hessie Sargent Spirit of Volunteering Award in Boston.
