The Boston Pops and Boston Ballet present “White Swan” from Swan Lake in a first-ever collaborative digital work. Boston Pops Assistant Concertmaster Elita Kang and Principal Harpist Jessica Zhou join Boston Ballet Principal Dancers (and real-life partners) Paulo Arrais and Derek Dunn in a collaboration inspired by the famous Act II pas de deux from Swan Lake. Usually danced by a ballerina and male dancer, in the respective roles of the white swan Odette and Prince Siegfried, this version choreographed by Arrais features the romantic duet between two male dancers filmed by and in the home of Boston Ballet Soloist Isaac Akiba.

"I’ve been a ballet lover since childhood, so the prospect of being able to collaborate with dancers, even remotely, is a dream come true for me,” says Kang, who came up with the idea. “We at the BSO perform a great deal of music that spans many genres, but we rarely get to collaborate with ballet dancers, hence the idea.” She reached out to Arrais, who then created the special choreography.

“Collaborating with musicians from the BSO has always been a dream of mine. When I received the video and sound content from Jessica and Elita, my mind overflowed with inspiration. Working alongside my partner, Derek Dunn, was truly special,” says Arrais. “Reinventing our way of creating art is humbling during this unprecedented time in our modern history. More than ever artists must continue to share their vision, creativity, and shared sense of humanity.”

“It has given us something concrete to work on in a time when our worlds have come to a screeching halt,” Kang adds. “To be able to create something slightly different from a beloved classic while forming new relationships with great artists from another wonderful artistic organization has been a real pleasure.”
