Performances at Tanglewood
A chance to listen every night of the
Tanglewood is the site of nearly 100 concerts each summer, including performances by the BSO, guest artist recitals, jazz artists, popular artists, the Boston POPS, and Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center.
Concert attendance is just as important a part of the TMC experience as concert performance, as Fellows find inspiration in the superlative music-making that surrounds them daily - from either front-of-house seating in the Shed and Ozawa Hall, or among the many picnics on the lawn.
TMC Fellows have the opportunity to hear their BSO mentors in three different programs weekly, in addition to a multitude of chamber music and guest artist recitals, Friday evening prelude concerts, and several popular artist concerts throughout the summer. And naturally, Fellows can support their colleagues in attending all of the TMC concerts in which they are not performing.
Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra concerts, chamber music performances, and vocal recitals are held in SEIJI OZAWA HALL, as well as BSO guest artist recitals and BSO Prelude concerts. Ozawa Hall is the main performance space for the TMC. It seats over 1,100 inside and has excellent sight lines from additional lawn seating, to which the back of the Hall is open whenever weather permits.
TMC Fellows also perform in the other spaces on the Tanglewood grounds, including the Tanglewood Theatre and the Koussevitzky Music Shed.
The KOUSSEVITZKY MUSIC SHED is a covered, open-air venue that serves as the main performance space for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, seating over 5,000 inside and over 10,000 outside on the lawn. All Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and Popular Artist concerts are held in the Shed. The Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra performs in the Shed in the Bernstein Memorial Concert and on Tanglewood on Parade, a joint gala concert with the BSO and the Boston POPS.
In addition to the numerous rehearsal and practice spaces in use on campus, Tanglewood is also home to the Copland Library, which houses a substantial collection of books, chamber music and other scores, and recordings. Tanglewood also has two cafés and a gift shop, and a small BEACH for use by the Tanglewood community, including BSO members, TMC Fellows, students of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, BSO staff, and visiting artists.
