Harbison, Gershwin, Copland and Ellington

July 5: Canadian conductor Jacques Lacombe leads this All-American program to open the BSO’s 2015 season at Tanglewood.

He is joined by pianist Kirill Gerstein, a frequent BSO guest and an alumnus of Boston’s Berklee College of Music with an affinity for both classical and jazz idioms, for Gershwin’s exuberant, jazz-inflected Piano Concerto in F. The Obie-award-winning actor John Douglas Thompson narrated Aaron Copland’s tribute to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Opening this concert is Boston-based Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison’s Remembering Gatsby, a jazzy orchestral score that was the basis of the overture for this opera The Great Gatsby. Duke Ellington’s impressionistic, blues-tinged tone painting of New York City’s Harlem neighborhood completes the program.

Beethoven and Shostakovich

July 12: BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons conducts this August 1, 2015, concert in the Koussevitzky Music Shed with three French soloists—the brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet—in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, a work that rewards a sense of competition and play among its three solo parts.

Beethoven wrote this unusual concerto in 1804 purportedly for his patron and friend the Archduke Rudolph to perform as piano soloist with his private orchestra.

Maestro Nelsons also leads Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, which the orchestra had just performed and recorded earlier that year for its Deutsche Grammophon Shostakovich symphony series. Andris Nelsons and the BSO took the piece on a European festival tour in August 2015. Shostakovich wrote the Tenth—after an eight-year hiatus from the composition of symphonies—following the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. Widely read as a direct reaction to Stalin’s demise and a public re-establishment of Shostakovich’s artistic independence, the Tenth became one of the composer’s most popular and frequently performed works.

Mozart and Mahler

July 19: This warm and engaging August 17, 2013, program, led by BSO Conductor Emeritus Bernard Haitink, features the German violinist Isabelle Faust in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, nicknamed “Turkish” for the fiery music in its finale.

Mozart wrote all five of his violin concertos in the mid-1770s, when he was in his late teens. Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is the last of the trio of symphonies with vocal movements using texts from the German folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Boy’s Magic Horn”). By far Mahler’s most gregarious symphony, the Fourth bursts with gorgeous melody and concludes with a setting for soprano and orchestra of the Wunderhorn text “Life in Heaven.”

Mozart, Haydn and Ravel

July 26: The effortlessly musical, multitalented André Previn—known as a jazz and classical pianist, film, stage, and concert composer, and a conductor of the world’s greatest orchestras—had a long, congenial relationship with the BSO and Tanglewood.

This 2007 concert touches on music closest to his heart: the Viennese classicists Mozart and Haydn, and the colorful, early 20th-century music of Ravel. Maestro Previn is joined by German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott as soloist in Haydn’s jovial and lyrical Cello Concerto and by American mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung for Ravel’s lush three-song cycle Shéhérazade. Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, one of his most important early symphonies, opens the program and Ravel’s brilliant orchestration of his charming piano suite Mother Goose concludes.

Berlioz, Beethoven and Thompson

August 2: Seiji Ozawa’s brilliant 29-year tenure as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra ended with the completion of the 2001-2002 Symphony Hall season.

His history with the orchestra and with Tanglewood was marked in a weekend of “Celebrating Seiji!” events, culminating in this performance in the Koussevitzky Music Shed. Maestro Ozawa leads a scintillating performance of a work strongly identified with the BSO’s legacy: Berlioz’s kaleidoscopic, virtuosic Symphonie fantastique. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus and five outstanding vocalists, along with perennial Tanglewood presence Peter Serkin as piano soloist, join Maestro Ozawa for Beethoven’s majestic and rousing Choral Fantasy in C minor. To conclude the concert, the audience was asked to participate in a performance of Randall Thompson’s a cappella Alleluia, the piece that opens the Tanglewood Music Center’s summer each summer. Also, a special note: BSO timpanist Everett Firth was acknowledged onstage at the end of this performance upon his retirement from the orchestra after his monumental 50-year career.

Mahler Symphony No. 3

August 9: BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons has an affinity for the grandest, most ambitious symphonic repertoire.

Here he leads a stunning performance of Mahler’s biggest and most varied work, the Third Symphony, the second piece in the symphonic trilogy using text from the folk-poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Boy’s Magic Horn”). The wonderful Susan Graham is the mezzo-soprano soloist in the fourth and fifth movements; she is joined by women’s chorus and children’s chorus in the fifth-movement Wunderhorn setting “Es sungen drei Engel” (“Three angels were singing”). The symphony explores the relationship among nature, humankind, and the spirit through movements with such titles as “What the Wild Flowers Tell Me,” “What the Angels Tell Me,” and, in the extended, gorgeous finale, “What Love Tells Me.”

Beethoven Symphony No. 9 

August 23: For decades, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood season has concluded with a joyous performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

This concert features the orchestra’s most recent performance of that iconic work, led by frequent BSO guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero and featuring four outstanding American soloists along with, as always, our own Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Best known for its glorious theme-and-variations finale setting Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” the Ninth Symphony was Beethoven’s final completed orchestral score, a work whose extraordinary emotional power and innovative artistry is still compelling in 2020 as we celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year.
