Bill Barclay and his creative team return to join BSO Associate Conductor Ken-David Masur for an imaginative treatment of Grieg's music for Ibsen's fantastical folk-play Peer Gynt. Rough and rustic, negligent and occasionally criminal, Peer Gynt undergoes many adventures-among them kidnapping his erstwhile fiancée, encountering the Mountain King and begetting a son by the king's daughter, traveling in North Africa, and sidestepping the Devil. Opening the program is Beethoven's incidental music for Goethe's tragedy Egmont, featuring soprano and narrator along with the orchestra, and best-known for its overture, which is frequently heard on its own. The play tells of the Flemish Count Egmont's refusal to relinquish his ideal of freedom in his struggle against the tyrannical Duke of Alba.

Boston Symphony Orchestra Associate Conductor Ken-David Masur makes his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia in summer 2018, leading two all-Tchaikovsky programs, then returns to Tanglewood to conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra in music of Glinka, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Kirill Gerstein, and Stravinsky's Firebird. He travels to Tokyo at summer's end to conduct workshops and a concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Mendelssohn Foundation in Japan. In October 2018 he leads a subscription week with the BSO. Guest engagements in the coming season include those with the Louisville Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, and Chicago Civic Orchestra, plus concerts abroad with the National Philharmonic of Russia, Collegium Musicum Basel, Stavanger Symphony, and Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra in France. Recent performance highlights include weeks with the Milwaukee, Colorado, and Portland (ME) symphonies and returns to the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Munich Symphony, where he is Principal Guest Conductor, and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Japan. He led l' Orchestre National de France in Paris in a program with Anne-Sophie Mutter, and regularly conducts in Germany, Korea, and Moscow. As a sought-after leader and educator of younger players, Mr. Masur frequently conducts the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Boston University Tanglewood Institute orchestra, and the New England Conservatory, and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestras.

Ken-David Masur and his wife, pianist Melinda Lee Masur, are founders and Artistic Directors of the Chelsea Music Festival, an annual two-week multimedia production of music, art, and cuisine, which in June 2018 presented its 9th season, "Bach 333," in New York City. Its productions are varied and internationally themed, always including premieres of new works by young and established composers. The New York Times frequently features the festival amongst its Best Classical picks of the season.

In 2011 Ken-David Masur was the recipient of the Seiji Ozawa Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood, where he was invited to return as a Fellow in 2012. He made his Boston Symphony Orchestra debut at Tanglewood in July 2012, sharing a program with his father, conductor Kurt Masur. He became a BSO assistant conductor in fall 2014. Previous appointments include associate conductor of the San Diego Symphony, assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France, and resident conductor of the San Antonio Symphony. He has had guest engagements with the Dresden, Israel, and Japan Philharmonics; with the Orchestre National de Toulouse, and the Hiroshima, Omaha, and Memphis symphonies. Ken-David Masur has recently made recordings with the English Chamber Orchestra and violinist Fanny Clamagirand, as well as with the Stavanger Symphony. As founding music director of the Bach Society Orchestra and Chorus at Columbia University, he toured Germany and released a critically acclaimed album of symphonies and cantatas by W.F. Bach, C.P.E. Bach and J.S. Bach. Masur received a Grammy nomination from the Latin Recording Academy in the category Best Classical Album of the Year for his work as a producer of the album "Salon Buenos Aires."

A winning combination of beautiful voice and musical versatility has played no small part in sustaining Camilla Tilling's top flight career which has now spanned almost two decades. An acclaimed early debut at New York City Opera launched her career on an international trajectory which has since seen performances on the world's major opera, concert and recital stages while simultaneously building an impressive discography.

A successful debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) was the start of an ongoing relationship which has seen her return to London as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Dorinda (Orlando), Oscar (Un ballo in maschera), Arminda (La finta giardiniera), Gretel (Hansel und Gretel) and most recently as Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro). Camilla Tilling has appeared at The Metropolitan Opera as both Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Nannetta (Falstaff), at Opéra national de Paris and Teatro alla Scala as Ilia (Idomeneo), at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, La Monnaie and the Munich Opera Festival as Sophie, at San Francisco Opera, Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Bayerische Staatsoper and Opéra national de Paris as Susanna and, last season, at Drottningholms Slottsteater in a role debut as Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro). With the vocal flexibility to embrace diverse repertoire, Camilla Tilling has also enjoyed success as the Governess (The Turn of the Screw) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice) at Salzburg Mozartwoche, Donna Clara (Der Zwerg) at Bayerische Staatsoper, l'Ange (Saint François d'Assise) at Dutch National Opera, and Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande) at Madrid's Teatro Real, at Semperoper Dresden and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

A highly regarded concert performer, Camilla Tilling is a regular guest with many of the world's leading orchestras. Recent concert highlights include Bach's Matthäus-Passion with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle, Schumann's Faustszenen with NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester under Thomas Hengelbrock, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem with both the New York Philharmonic under Christoph von Dohnányi and with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under Bernard Haitink, Dutilleux' Correspondances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Esa-Pekka Salonen, Bach's Mass in B minor with the Wiener Symphoniker under Philippe Jordan, and Sieben frühe Lieder with Sydney Symphony Orchestra under von Dohnányi, with Orchestre National de France under Daniele Gatti and with the London Symphony Orchestra under François-Xavier Roth.

In addition to a house debut at Royal Swedish Opera as Countess Almaviva, Camilla Tilling's current season includes Mahler's Symphony No.4 with Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis at Teatro alla Scala with Bernard Haitink and also with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Michael Tilson-Thomas, and she returns to the USA to sing Ein deutsches Requiem with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons and Beethoven's Symphony No.9with the New York Philharmonic under Alan Gilbert. 

Among Camilla Tilling's many recordings are three recital discs with Paul Rivinius on the BIS label: the most recent, I Skogen released in July 2015, being a celebration of Nordic composers. She appears on Die Schöpfung with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Bernard Haitink, Handel's La resurrezione with Le Concert d'Astree and Emmanuelle Haim, and she performs the role of Ilia (Idomeneo) on DVD from Teatro alla Scala conducted by Daniel Harding.

Bill Barclay, a composer, actor, writer, and director, is the Director of Music at Shakespeares Globe Theatre in London and the first American to join the theatre staff in the company's 17 year history.  A Weston, MA native and Shakespeare specialist, he has composed for the Globe (3 seasons), Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts (11 seasons, company member), the Actors Shakespeare Project in Boston (9 seasons, Resident Acting Company member), and the Tanglewood Music Center (4 seasons).  Bill was a member of the Acting Company at The Mercury Theatre in Colchester, England from 2009-2012, and makes his Broadway debut with this season's Twelfth Night and Richard III, starring Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry, as Music Consultant. Bills original musical works include Call of the Wild,Three Sisters, The Hamlet Symphony, Everyman Found, and The Mad Pirate and the Mermaid; his solo performances include Muse on Fire: Shakespeare & the Music of the Spheres, which has been performed over a dozen times across the US and UK. He has performed roles or composed original scores for The Huntington Theatre, SpeakEasy Stage, W.H.A.T., Central Square Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, the Vineyard Playhouse, The Olney Theatre Center, Connecticut Rep, La MaMa ETC, and Theater Row (NYC), among others. He has held artist residencies at universities across the country, has taught acting at Emerson College and Boston University, and been a guest lecturer at Harvard University. In addition to recurring roles on Showtime (Brotherhood) and PBS, Bill can be seen in the filmsOcean Boulevard and The Time Machine (DreamWorks). In addition to his work with the BYSO, he has collaborated with the ALEA III Orchestra, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra, and the Aurea Ensemble (which commissioned his latest concert work, Five Sonnets to Orpheus), and is a founding member of The Mahagonny Ensemble in Poughkeepsie, New York. A winner of the Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship (the largest grant for actors in the US), and the Boston Globe Monologue Scholarship Competition, he is a two-time Elliot Norton Award nominee for sound design, and has twice received Metlifes Meet the Composer Grants. A 1999 Weston High School grad, Bill is an alumnus of Vassar College and the National Theatre Institute, and earned his MFA at the Boston University School of Theatre. His first books as editor will be published this year: The Plays of Jon Lipsky, Volumes 1 and 2 (Smith & Kraus).

Daniel Berger-Jones is a Boston-based actor, producer, and entrepreneur. As a performer he has appeared in theaters throughout the Greater Boston area including the Huntington, the ART, Lyric Stage Company, Boston Playwright's Theatre, Actor's Shakespeare Project, Shakespeare and Company, Company One, Speakeasy Stage, and more. In 2007, he became a Co-Founder of the theatre company Orfeo Group, with whom he produced and starred in three Eliot Norton Award-winning productions. As a narrator, he has had the pleasure of performing with The Boston Pops, The Boston Symphony Youth Orchestra, Boston Celebrity Series, and has been featured in a variety of small commercials and documentaries. In 2011, he became Co-Founder of Cambridge Historical Tours, a boutique private tour company for the Greater Boston Area, where today he is President of the board and a perpetual tour guide, questing to share knowledge and stories in an exciting, interactive way.

Georgia Lyman has been a staple of the Boston film and theater community for over a decade. A founding member of the critically acclaimed Orfeo Group, she starred in and/or co-produced all 5 shows during their 6 year run. Other local works include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof & The Scene (Lyric Stage Co.), The Atheist (Boston Playwright's Theatre), Chesapeake (New Rep Theater), The Women, The Whale, Necessary Monsters (Speakeasy Stage Co.), and the world premiere of Hotel Nepenthe (Actors Shakespeare Project). She is the recipient of several Elliot Norton awards, including Outstanding Solo Performance, Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble.

Film and television credits include Showtime's Brotherhood, RIPD, Law & Order: SVU, The Women, The Town, Infinitely Polar Bear, The Forger, The Makeover, Bride Wars and others.

Risher Reddick is a theater artist of many stripes with roots in Boston and Chicago. He cut his teeth as an actor in New England, working with many regional theaters including Shakespeare & Company, The American Repertory Theatre, New Rep, and Actors' Shakespeare Project. From 2007-2012 Risher produced, directed, and acted in plays with his theatre company, Orfeo Group, garnering praise from audiences and critics alike and winning three Elliot Norton Awards for outstanding production. As a teacher he has worked with theatre companies and universities across the country including Emerson College, UMass Lowell, and Northwestern University. These days Risher works primarily as a director, re-imagining classics and devising new plays both in professional and academic settings. In 2014 he devised a new play, Hymns to Future Tense, with Bricolage Production Company in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2015 and 2016 he spent most of his time working at Steppenwolf and Lookingglass theatres, serving as an assistant to his directing mentors, Michael Rohd, Jessica Thebus, and Mary Zimmerman. He is currently working on a new project, To the Table, a civic engagement piece using story, song, and food to facilitate conversation between community stakeholders. He holds a BFA in acting from Boston University and recently completed his coursework in the MFA directing program at Northwestern University.

Will Lyman is well known to Boston audiences for his work with many local theater companies. A founding board member of Commonwealth Shakespeare Co., he has appeared there as Brutus, Prospero, Claudius, and last summer's King Lear. He has also been seen at the Huntington in All My Sons, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Dead End; at New Rep in Long Day's Journey into Night, Exits and Entrances, Clean House, and Ice Breaker; at Speakeasy in The Dying Gaul, at Wheelock in To Kill a Mockingbird, at Boston Playwrights' Theatre in The Wrestling Patient (in collaboration with Speakeasy), King of the Jews, and A Girl's War, and at the Nora in Equus and Operation Epsilon. Elsewhere in the U.S. he has performed with the Denver Center, Hartford Stage, Pennsylvania Stage, American Place, George Street Playhouse, and NJ Shakespeare, as well as in several off-Broadway productions in New York. He has narrated in performances with the National Symphony (Ivan the Terrible) and acted in conjunction with the Cleveland Orchestra (Tom Stoppard/André Previn's Every Good Boy Deserves Favor) and the Handel and Haydn Society (Benda's Medea.) Mr. Lyman is a multiple recipient of both Norton and IRNE awards and was honored with the Howard Keel Award for service to the Screen Actors Guild. He was given 2013's Norton Award for Sustained Excellence and 2015's NETC Award. On television he has appeared in episodes of Crossbow, Hull High, Threat Matrix, and Commander in Chief and in the TV movies Meltdown, Our Fathers, Three Sovereigns for Sarah, and George Washington. Feature film credits include A Perfect Murder, The Siege, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Mystic River, Little Children (narrator), and What Doesn't Kill You. He has narrated the PBS public affairs program Frontline since the second season. On a more whimsical note, he also voices the long-running "Most Interesting Man in the World" ads, and has appeared as himself on The Simpsons.

Kathleen Parks is a fiddler, singer, songwriter, and dancer who brings inexhaustible energy and creativity to the stage and studio. Her lyrics and melodies lean toward pop, while her fiddle blends and reimagines traditional and modern musical styles with a boundless improvisational spirit. From her deep grounding in bluegrass, jazz, and Irish music springs something entirely new.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music on full scholarship, Parks is one of two front-women for Twisted Pine, whose debut album is now out from Signature Sounds. Widely recognized as one of the most exciting and skillful bands in the Boston-area acoustic music scene, Twisted Pine has been nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association's Momentum Award and has performed at many notable venues and festivals. NPR Music enthuses about the "upbeat, poppy vibe; energetic, driving rhythms; virtuosic solos; tight harmonies" on the self-titled new record, which features five original songs by Parks.

Parks has shared the stage with artists such as The Punch Brothers, Darol Anger, Peter Rowan, Aoife O'Donovan, Claire Lynch, John Doyle, Allison Brown, Margo Price, Bobby Vinton, Eugene Friesen, Dr. David Wallace, The Suitcase Junket, Michael Cleveland, John Whelan, Jimmy Sturr, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, Lindsey Webster, and more. Other projects include the new Irish quintet Cat and the Moon, Elias Alexander and the Bywater Band, and the duo Kat Parks and Brad Bensko.

Parks is also a teacher working with private students and groups on Celtic and American roots music, as well as rhythmic techniques.

Cristina Todesco has worked in theater and film for over 20 years. She has designed with Actor Shakespeare Project, ART Institute, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Company One, Huntington Theatre, Lyric Stage Company, New Repertory Theatre, Nora Theater, Orfeo Group, Speakeasy Stage, Stoneham Theater, Wheelock Family Theater, Boston College, Boston Conservatory, Boston University, Harvard University, Suffolk University, Opera Boston, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Summer Play Festival, the Culture Project at the Barrow Street Theater, and the Olney Theatre Center in Maryland. She is the recipient of four Elliot Norton Awards for Outstanding Design for The Clean House (New Rep), The Aliens (Company One), Twelfth Night (ASP) and The Flick(Company One). She was also an assistant art director on the feature film Black Mass, and the ABC pilot "See Kate Run." Prior to designing, she was a scenic artist working on many feature films, including The CrucibleThe Spanish PrisonerState and MainThe Perfect StormThe BrotherhoodUnderdog21 The Pink Panther 2The BoxMall Cop, and Zoo Keeper. Kathleen Doyle is a visual story teller - a costume and puppet designer working in theater, opera, musicals, dance, and film. Kathleen graduated from N.Y.U. with an M.F.A. in Theater Design, and holds an additional Master of Arts in Dramaturgy from Villanova University. Doyle also designs costumes and creates puppets, marionettes, masks, shadow puppets and stop-motion animation films. She is a proud member of USA-Local 829. In 2001 she was awarded a Fulbright grant to Japan. In 2005, she was awarded another Fulbright grant, this time to China and Hong Kong. In 2012, she traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil where she attended a retrospective of her art and design work at the Casarao de la Cultura. Based in New York, her ebullient designs have been seen all over the city, from The New Victory Theater to The 52nd Street Project, from La MaMa to Here Art Center, from The Joyce Theater to Jazz at Lincoln Center, from New York City Center to The Kennedy Center. Her work has also been seen at Walt Disney World Florida, The Santa Fe Opera and The San Francisco Opera. Kathleen has traveled throughout the world, to dozens of different countries, and served as an International Goodwill Ambassador in Peru. She recently returned from South Korea where she designed puppets and masks for a new musical and from Vietnam where she served as Artist-In-Residence with The Thang Long National Water Puppetry Theater. Kathleen Doyle is a LabWorks Grant Recipient at The New 42nd Street Studios, developing her own original project that will tour eight Hawai'ian Islands next year.

Based in Boston for over 25 years, Karen has designed the lighting for over 200 productions.  Her work has been seen at Merrimack Repertory Theater, Speakeasy Stage Company, Lyric Stage Company, Actors' Shakespeare Project, Central Square Theater, New Rep, Boston Playwrights' Theater, Boston Midsummer Opera, and Shakespeare & Company.  Karen has taught Lighting Design at MIT and Northeastern University, and has been a guest designer at Boston Conservatory, Boston College, Brandeis University, and Emerson College. She is proud to serve as the treasurer of the Theater Community Benevolent Fund, and is a member of the United Scenic Artists' Union. She is the recipient of the 2002 and 2006, and 2008 IRNE Award for Best Lighting Design, and the NYC SOLO Fest 2013.

David Reiffel (Sound Designer) has created sound, music, and words for theaters in the Boston area and across the United States, including Court Theatre (Chicago), Theatre for a New Audience (NY), Chautauqua Stage Company, LaMama, and five years on the road as composer-in-residence/sound designer with the nationally-acclaimed Cornerstone Theatre Company. This year he wrote original music for the US premiere of Shakespeare in Love at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where he previously created scores for a 1930s-Hollywood themed Twelfth Night and a Romeo and Juliet set in Alta California in the 1840s. This season has also heard his music for Cymbeline at Shakespeare & Co. and A Midsummer Night's Dream at Actors Shakespeare Project, along with sound designs for Gabriel at Stoneham Theatre, Bridges of Madison County at SpeakEasy Stage, and White Snake Productions' opera Rev. 23.

Original musical theater work includes music and lyrics for The Rag Doll (book by Silvia Graziano) at Blue Spruce Theatre Company (IRNE Nominee, Best New Play) and lyrics for Cupcake (book: Bradley Seeman, music: Michael Wartofsky), at Club Café. His musical Glory is presently in development at the NOMTI Advanced Writers Lab, where he serves as Program Director.

Nicole Pierce is Artistic Director of EgoArt, Inc., a dance-theater company she founded in 1999.  She has created over 30 dance works for her company and maintains an active freelance career as a choreographer, teacher and dancer. Pierce's choreographic work is eclectic in nature and explores traditional concert dance, multimedia installation, and theater. Karen Campbell in the Boston Globe called her work "expansive, muscular movement etched with vivid detail."

Pierce is also a classically trained pianist and maintains a private practice teaching piano to children and adults. Much of her choreographic work is musically inspired and generated in direct connection to musical scores brought into the rehearsal process.

Pierce has received fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Boston Dance Alliance and The Yard among others, and has performed throughout New England and in New York City. Pierce served on the dance faculty of Tufts University, Emerson College, The College of the Holy Cross, The Dance Complex and Green Street Studios and has conducted master classes at many schools and colleges including most recently Harvard University, Gibney Dance and Harkness Dance Center. Pierce choreographed for the BSO's production of The Soldier's Tale under Maestro Charles Dutoit in 2016. She continued her work with classical musicians with the premiere of Sweat, an a cappella opera, that premiered at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY that same year. Some of her most noted works are Requiem, set to the complete score of Mozart's Requiem as well as a series of monologues comprising The Ego Show cycle of which there are 7 parts. Leslie Sears (Stage Manger) - Ms. Sears works in theater and opera. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus joins the BSO this season for performances of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Poulenc’s Gloria led by Andris Nelsons (September 19-21, the opening program of the 2019-20 subscription season); Galina Grigorieva’s On Leaving and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 2, also under Maestro Nelsons (November 21-26); Duruflé’s Requiem under Giancarlo Guerrero (February 27-March 3), and Stravinsky’s Perséphone with Thomas Adès conducting (March 26-28). In addition, to mark the TFC’s fiftieth anniversary in April 2020, James Burton leads the ensemble in a post-concert Casual Friday performance of Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (April 17). Originally formed under the joint sponsorship of Boston University and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the all-volunteer Tanglewood Festival Chorus was established in 1970 by its founding conductor, the late John Oliver, who stepped down from his leadership position with the TFC at the end of the 2015 Tanglewood season. In February 2017, following appearances as guest chorus conductor at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood, and having prepared the chorus for that month’s BSO performances of Bach’s B minor Massled by Andris Nelsons, James Burton was named the new Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, also being appointed to the newly created position of BSO Choral Director. Mr. Burton occupies the Alan J. and Suzanne W. Dworsky Chair on the Boston Symphony Orchestra roster.

Though first established for performances at the BSO’s summer home, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus was soon playing a major role in the BSO’s subscription season as well as BSO concerts at Carnegie Hall; the ensemble now performs year-round with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops. It has performed with the BSO on tour in Hong Kong and Japan, and on two European tours, also giving a cappella concerts of its own on those two occasions. The TFC made its debut in April 1970 at Symphony Hall, in a BSO performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Leonard Bernstein conducting. Its first recording with the orchestra, Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust with Seiji Ozawa, received a Grammy nomination for Best Choral Performance of 1975. The TFC has since made dozens of recordings with the BSO and Boston Pops, with Seiji Ozawa, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Colin Davis, Keith Lockhart, and John Williams. In August 2011, with John Oliver conducting and soloist Stephanie Blythe, the TFC gave the world premiere of Alan Smith’s An Unknown Sphere for mezzo-soprano and chorus, commissioned by the BSO for the ensemble’s 40th anniversary. Its most recent recordings on BSO Classics, all drawn from live performances, include a disc of a cappella music marking the TFC’s 40th anniversary; Ravel’s complete Daphnis et Chloé (a 2009 Grammy-winner for Best Orchestral Performance), Brahms’s German Requiem, and William Bolcom’s Eighth Symphony for chorus and orchestra (a BSO 125th Anniversary Commission). On July 4, 2018, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus joined Keith Lockhart for the “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular” on the Charles River Esplanade.

Besides their work with the BSO, TFC members have also performed with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic and in a Saito Kinen Festival production of Britten’s Peter Grimes under Seiji Ozawa in Japan. The ensemble had the honor of singing at Sen. Edward Kennedy’s funeral; has performed with the Boston Pops for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics; and can be heard on the soundtracks of Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River, John Sayles’s Silver City, and Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. TFC members regularly commute from the greater Boston area and beyond to sing with the chorus in Boston and at Tanglewood. James Burton was appointed Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and to the newly created position of BSO Choral Director, in February 2017. He made his BSO subscription-series conducting debut in October 2018, leading the Tanglewood Festival Chorus in Maija Einfelde’s Lux aeterna. In August 2019 he led the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir and Boston Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of his The Lost Words, a BSO co-commission, as part of the summer’s gala Tanglewood on Parade concert. In April 2020 he will conduct the Tanglewood Festival Concert in a post-concert Casual Friday performance of Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil to celebrate the TFC’s fiftieth anniversary. Mr. Burton made his debut with the Boston Pops in December 2017, returned to the Pops podium last December—as he will again for Holiday Pops concerts in December 2019—and led the Pops this past June at Tanglewood in a program celebrating Queen with Marc Martel.

Born in London, James Burton holds a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Conservatory, where he studied with Frederik Prausnitz and Gustav Meier. He began his training at the Choir of Westminster Abbey, where he became head chorister, and was a choral scholar at St. John’s College, Cambridge. He has conducted concerts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Hallé Orchestra, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra, and Manchester Camerata. Opera credits include performances at English National Opera, English Touring Opera, Garsington Opera, and the Prague Summer Nights Festival, and he has served on the music staff of the Metropolitan Opera and Opera de Paris. Mr. Burton’s extensive choral conducting has included guest invitations with professional choirs including the Gabrieli Consort, the Choir of the Enlightenment, Wrocław Philharmonic, and the BBC Singers, with whom he performed in the inaugural season of Dubai’s Opera House in 2017. From 2002 to 2009 he served as choral director at the Hallé Orchestra, where he was music director of the Hallé Choir and founding conductor of the Hallé Youth Choir, winning the Gramophone Choral Award in 2009. From 2002 to 2017 he was music director of the Schola Cantorum of Oxford. Well known for his inspirational work with young musicians, he was director of the National Youth Choir of Japan in 2017 and founded the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir in 2018. Mr. Burton has given conducting master classes at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Tanglewood Music Center, and founded a scholarship for young conductors at Oxford. His growing composition portfolio includes works for commissioners including the National Portrait Gallery in London, the 2010 World Equestrian Games, the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and the Exon Festival, where he was composer-in-residence in 2015. His works are published by Edition Peters. As BSO Choral Director and Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, James Burton occupies the Alan J. and Suzanne W. Dworsky Chair, endowed in perpetuity.
