Anne Azéma
About
Before assuming the directorship of The Boston Camerata in 2008, French-born vocalist, scholar, educator, and stage director Anne Azéma was already acknowledged as a world leader in the field of medieval solo song. She is celebrated for her contagious energy and for her creative skill in building and directing musical productions of varied styles and periods, both for her recital programs and for larger ensembles, all the result of extensive research into original sources.
Anne Azéma’s current discography of 47 recordings as a soloist (Grand Prix du Disque; Edison Prize) and director, includes five solo CD recitals of medieval music, as well as two recent Camerata CDs with the label Harmonia Mundi.
Ms. Azéma's 2007 music theater creation, The Night's Tale – Le Tournoi de Chauvency, based on a 14th century French narrative, has been performed in France, Luxembourg, and the United States. 2017 marked the creation of an ensemble program, commissioned as part of an international exhibit of late Medieval artifacts, with a CD issued in 2019. In 2014, she edited, directed and staged The Play of Daniel – A Masterpiece Revisited to widespread acclaim. It was successfully reprised in 2017 and then regularly until 2025. In 2020, her trailblazing, made-for-Internet production of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas was viewed by music lovers on five continents and toured live in 2023. She is now at work on an international video game based on the Arthurian legends, as its narrator and musician (2026 release).
Her teaching activities include masterclasses, seminars, and residencies at conservatories and universities here in the US and abroad. She has contributed articles to scholarly and general audience publications and has been named Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government.
