Chris Newell
About
Chris Newell is the founding director of the Native American Cultural Program at the University of Connecticut and co-founder and director of education for the Akomawt Educational Initiative, a Native-owned educational consultancy based in Connecticut. A proud citizen of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, he was born and raised in Motahkmikuhk (Indian Township, Maine). Chris is a multi-award-winning museum professional, educator, and longtime singer with the Mystic River Singers, performing across the United States and Canada at cultural celebrations, powwows, and live stage events. In his children’s presentations, Chris shares Passamaquoddy musical traditions alongside contemporary Native expressions, creating an immersive and welcoming space where audiences learn through participation.
