Dean Murphy

American baritone Dean Murphy is a member of the ensemble at Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he has appeared in many productions, including leading roles such as Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Silvio in Pagliacci, Prince Yeletsky in a new production of The Queen of Spades, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Marcello in La bohème, and Germont in La traviata.

From 2018 to 2020, he was a member of the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera House, where he appeared as Figaro in The Barber of Seville and Schaunard in La bohème, as well as in Barrie Kosky's new production of Die Gezeichneten, Andreas Homoki's new production of Sweeney Todd, Christof Loy's new production of Don Pasquale, and Tatjana Gürbaca's new production of Le Grand Macabre.

Murphy has also been a member of the Accademia Rossiniana of the Rossini Opera Festival, where he sang Don Alvaro and Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims, and he has distinguished himself in international singing competitions, as a finalist at the Tenor Viñas Competition in Barcelona (2020) and the Moniuszko Vocal Competition of the Polish National Opera (2022).

Highlights of his early career include his company debut at the Semperoper Dresden as Schaunard in La bohème; his French debut at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy and at the Opéra de Dijon as Jean in Boesmans' Julie; his debut at Theater an der Wien as Prince Ottokar in Der Freischütz; Frédéric in Lakmé at the Berlin Philharmonie with the Deutsche Oper Berlin Orchestra; his Belgian debut as Schaunard in La bohème at Opera Vlaanderen; Paolo Orsini in Wagner's Rienzi at Müpa Budapest under Marc Albrecht; and Carmen at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival.

Murphy earned a master's degree in music from the Yale School of Music and a bachelor's degree in vocal performance from the Hartt School of Music.

Beyond Deutsche Oper Berlin, other projects include The Barber of Seville at San Diego Opera; La bohème in St. Gallen; Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the Blackwater Valley Music Festival in Ireland; Kurt Weill's Der Protagonist at Teatro La Fenice in Venice; and The Barber of Seville at the Royal Opera.
