Max Fan

Max Fan, 17, is a senior at Groton School. He has played piano for 14 years and currently studies with Ya-Fei Chuang and Robert Levin. He has previously studied with Ick-Choo Moon, Daniel Pollack, and Vladimir Khomyakov.  

Max debuted at 11 years old with the Costa Rica Philharmonic in 2018, and has since won numerous national and international awards, including winning YoungArts in 2024, finalist in New England Conservatory’s Preparatory Concerto Competition in 2023, and semifinalist at the Santa Cecilia International Piano Competition and The Music Center’s Spotlight in 2022. Max has performed at many distinguished venues, including Jordan Hall in Boston and the Mozarthaus in Vienna.  

He is deeply involved in music at school, serving as Head Music Prefect and performing regularly on campus and in local retirement homes, both as a soloist and in chamber music on the piano and the cello. Beyond music, Max has a diverse range of interests: he is passionate about linguistics and is currently studying Latin, Greek, and Arabic, is the Managing Editor of Groton’s student newspaper The Circle Voice, serves as president of the Computer Science Club, and plays Varsity Tennis. Moving forward, he plans to major in Symbolic Systems and minor in music at Stanford, continuing to engage in orchestra and chamber music.
