Donors
In the building of his new symphony for Boston, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s (BSO) founder and first benefactor, Henry Lee Higginson, knew that ticket revenues could never fully cover the costs of running a great orchestra. From 1881 to 1918, Higginson covered the orchestra’s annual deficits with personal contributions that exceeded $1 million. The Boston Symphony Orchestra now honors each of the following generous donors whose cumulative giving to the BSO, Tanglewood, and Boston Pops is $1 million or more with the designation of Great Benefactor.

The Walter Piston Society recognizes and honors those who have established one or more planned gifts – in any amount – for the future benefit of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood, or Boston Pops. Such gifts include bequest intentions (through one’s will, personal trust, IRA or insurance policy), charitable trusts, and gift annuities. The Society was established in 1982 and named for the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and noted musician who endowed the BSO’s Principal Flute Chair with a bequest.
