From Mao to Mozart (1981, 1hr 24 mins)
Head back in time, and across the ocean, with violinist Isaac Stern. Following the death of Chairman Mao and the gradual decriminalization of Western influences, China opens its doors to the West and, in 1979, Stern accepts an invitation to perform a recital with pianist David Golub. One concert turned into a tour that included master classes with music students in Beijing and Shanghai, attendance at rehearsals of the Peking Opera, and an inspiring meeting with a persecuted violin maker. From Mao to Mozart explores fascinating encounters between two different musical cultures and won an Academy Award for best documentary feature in 1981.
