Music has the potential to call forth many emotions—including, and perhaps most importantly, those we’re not able to express easily in words. Music doesn’t have to be pretty to be beautiful, it doesn’t have to be solemn or sad to be serious, and it doesn’t have to be joyful to be uplifting. Great music manages to enliven us sometimes despite its “mood.” Somehow its great beauty, along with the awareness that people can create such beauty, is a wonderful gift. Spanning several decades of BSO performances, the works that Thomas Wilkins has chosen from the BSO Archives for this streaming Family Concert demonstrate a wide range of possibilities to illustrate musical triumph.
