Jakub Hrůša conducts Suk, Martinů, & Brahms
Boston Symphony Orchestra Jakub Hrůša, conductor Alexandre Kantorow, piano SUK Scherzo fantastique MARTINŮ Symphony No. 6, Fantasies symphoniques BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 1

Known for an affinity for the music of his homeland, Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša leads the BSO in a program featuring two Czech composers. Josef Suk, one of Antonín Dvořák’s favorite students, was a prominent violinist and a popular composer in the early 20th century. These are the first BSO performances of his Fantasiké Scherzo, a kind of jolly danse macabre. Suk briefly mentored his younger compatriot Bohuslav Martinů, whose Sixth Symphony was a BSO 75th anniversary commission dedicated to his conductor friend, the BSO’s Charles Munch. Alexandre Kantorow, who made his BSO debut in 2022, returns to perform Brahms’ turbulent Piano Concerto No. 1, the composer’s first fully realized, ambitious foray into orchestral music.
