Stravinsky Ballets: Petrushka & The Firebird
Music Director Andris Nelsons conducts two of Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking ballet scores — the buoyant, dazzling Petrushka and the heroic, shimmering Firebird — both of which have become cornerstones of the BSO’s repertoire and recording history. Former BSO conductor Pierre Monteux led the world premiere of Petrushka by the Ballet Russes in 1911, and nine years later, he conducted the BSO in its first performances of the ballet’s music. For The Firebird, Stravinsky himself led the BSO at Sanders Theatre and Symphony Hall in 1935. These performances are also the second of two weeks in which the BSO and Andris Nelsons perform all three of Stravinsky’s revolutionary early ballets, The Rite of Spring, Petrushka, and The Firebird.
